OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF SOLUTIONS | NOBEL PRIZE AWARDED TO SOLUTIONS EDITORIAL BOARD MEMBER DR. ELINOR OSTROM

PRESS RELEASE

OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF SOLUTIONS

…A New Publication to Inspire and Achieve a Sustainable and Desirable Future…

December 2009. “We are pleased to announce the debut of SOLUTIONS, an online and print publication devoted to creating a global forum for dialogue with people, governments, business and civil society. Our goal is to identify integrative socio-economic and environmental solutions that inspire action towards a better, more sustainable future for everyone.” ~ Robert Costanza, SOLUTIONS Editor-in-Chief.

For almost forty years, individual members of SOLUTIONS’ editorial board -- people like Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom, Ray Anderson, Lester Brown, Paul Hawken, Hunter Lovins, Gus Speth and Larry Susskind -- have been strong, vocal supporters of solutions to urgent eco-economic problems worldwide. They know that the planet’s biggest challenges need solutions that involve not only science and technology, but innovative and practical answers to how we organize ourselves and how we live. They believe that people everywhere are finally ready to read about realistic, creative ways in which to create a more harmonious world.

“SOLUTIONS will help us break out of the argument and debate culture by emphasizing constructive collaboration, shared goals, respect for alternative views and civility. Whether the topic is global warming, overfishing, the economic crisis or human rights, SOLUTIONS will be the outlet for substantive discussion on what is working, and how readers can be part of the answer.” ~ Robert Costanza.

"After decades of journals presenting problems, it is a blessed relief to encounter one that focuses on solutions. Yeah! This is just the kind of thing we need in a world besieged with what’s going wrong. So let’s hear it for what’s going right." ~ Norman Myers, renowned expert on systems ecology.

Published bimonthly, and distributed internationally, SOLUTIONS will synthesize the best of our knowledge and creativity, driven by a vision of a future with a globally higher quality of life. Written for a broad audience, SOLUTIONS will reach beyond traditional academic journals to bring expert ideas to the informed public. "We live in a world of sound bites and highly compartmentalized thought; SOLUTIONS will provide the rich and deep ideas we need to make a positive difference in the world." ~ Jeffrey Hollender, Executive Chair of Seventh Generation, Inc.

"SOLUTIONS promises to be a spirited no-holds-barred magazine for intellectual grown-ups who think and do at this ‘all-hands-on-deck’ time, humanity’s most important moment ever." ~ Wes Jackson, President of The Land Institute.

PRESS RELEASE

Nobel Prize in Economics Awarded to SOLUTIONS Editorial Board Member Dr. Elinor Ostrom

October 2009. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Elinor Ostrom, a world-renowned political scientist and the first female to win a Nobel Prize in economics.

We are extremely proud of our association with Dr. Ostrom and her orthodoxy-shattering work demonstrating that when communities are given the right to self-organize they can democratically govern themselves to preserve the environment.

In her book, "Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action" Dr. Ostrom shows that common resource-pool problems can be solved by collective community action rather than by a coercive state or by privatization. She provides much-needed fresh thinking about how civilization can manage increasingly scarce natural resources in the face of population growth and increasing prosperity.

This is the kind of iconoclastic reading you will find in SOLUTIONS. Stay tuned -- our very first edition will be out soon!
