Negotiations have resumed- it turned out the Group of 77 was opposing an effort to not renew the Kyoto Protocol, a result that would leave the world without a legal framework post 2012. The Guardian reports that a series of informal meetings have led to an agreement to present leaders with two texts, one of which will result in a second period commitment period for Kyoto. Many environmental groups are once again congratulating the African nations in particular for forcing the issue and potentially saving the Kyoto Protocol- although there is no done-deal yet.

In other news, someone (most likely the Yes Men) released a press release from Environment Canada announcing a new target of 40% reductions over 1990 levels by 2020 and escalating finance for poor countries starting at 1% of GDP and scaling up to 5%. The press release was backed by a website indistinguishable from the real one, a faux retraction from the Canadian Government, media coverage on a fake Wall Street Journal website and a fake UNFCC website. Needless to say the release generated considerable consternation amongst the Canadian delegation here.
