Local residents and environmental activists are fighting for a different future for Coal River Mountain: instead of Massey Energy's planned mountaintop removal coal mining operation, many are fighting for a wind farm to be installed on the mountain--one that would provide renewable energy and green jobs to the community.
A study comparing the two plans for the mountain "concluded that a 328-megawatt wind farm, enough to power 70,000 homes forever, would generate more long-term jobs than the proposed mining project while imposing far fewer costs on human health and the environment. The county would receive $1.74 million per year forever from the wind farm's property tax revenues, compared to $36,000 per year for 17 years from the mountaintop removal operation."
