Former U.S. senator Gary Hart served on the Armed Services committee, was a founder of the Congressional Military Reform caucus, and is currently chair of the American Security Project. He is chair of the Threat Reduction Advisory Council at the Department of Defense. Hart was cochair of the U.S. Commission on National Security for the Twenty-first Century. The commission performed the most comprehensive review of national security since 1947, predicted the terrorist attacks on America, and proposed a sweeping overhaul of U.S. national security structures and policies. Gary Hart represented the state of Colorado in the United States Senate from 1975 to 1987. In 1984 and 1988, he was a candidate for his party’s nomination for president.
