He is a senior fellow and editor at, an organization devoted to restoring an appreciation of common assets to contemporary life, and senior fellow at Project for Public Spaces, a New York-based organization that helps citizens enliven their communities. He was editor of Utne Reader for fifteen years and an editor at Ode magazine for four years.
