Biography

Former Minister of Education, University and Research. Full Professor of Political Economy at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and the founding director of the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation. Deputy Project Leader of the Future Africa initiative. Extraordinary Professor at the School of Public Leadership of the University of Stellenbosch, Senior Fellow at the Centre for Social Investment of the University of Heidelberg and at the Hertie School of Governance (Germany). Associate Fellow at the United Nations University. Since March 2018 a Member of Parliament in Italy; appointed as Minister of Education, University and Research in September 2019. One of his first decisions was to make education on sustainable development mandatory in all schools.
