Shalander is the scientist for Dryland Systems in South Asia at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, and the regional coordinator of CRP Dryland Systems for South Asia. He has worked for more than two decades on analyzing smallholders farming and livestock production systems, value chains, farm systems intensification, conservation agriculture, and climate change and institutional issues.
